Clark/Singh is a minimalist duet of voice and drums. Their first project is a study of a song cycle written by Brazilian composer Dorival Caymmi, Canções Praierias. Stripping songs down to their most essential form, the duo employs sweeping melodies, rhythmic interplay and changing timbre as the tools to explore spaces typically filled with harmonic movement. An avid writer, composer, musician and painter, Tom Jobim said of Dorival, he “picked up a guitar and orchestrated the world.” In Canções Praieiras, Caymmi crafts vivid scenes depicting life by the sea as fishermen and villagers go to work, fall in love, celebrate, and face death. All this activity happens around the main character of this song cycle: the sea. The sea is first beautiful, enticing and mesmerizing, but also awesomely powerful, demanding. Sweet, even when it exacts sacrifice, placating yet unforgiving, constant but everchanging. It serves as both a metaphor for the complexities of the human heart as well as an acknowledgement of something indomitable and beyond comprehension. The communities by the sea face these dichotomies of life and death, beauty and destruction, tenderness and passion, daily. Caymmi makes these far away characters accessible and even familiar in the simple sophistication of his music and lyrics. Drummer and composer, Scott Clark keeps time in the balance. His performances behind the kit are generous and empathetic, establishing his voice immediately upon striking the surface. Laura Ann Singh is a multilingual American singer, recording artist and composer, often associated with musica popular brasileira and Latin boleros. She has performed internationally in Europe, Russia, and South America as well as the Tiny Desk concert series on NPR and headlining the annual Globalfest festival in New York City. Rock ‘n’ roll is often hard to define, or even to find, in these fractured musical times. But to paraphrase an old saying, you know it when you hear it. And you always hear it with the Wallflowers. For the past 30 years, the Jakob Dylan-led act has stood as one of rock’s most dynamic and purposeful bands – a unit dedicated to and continually honing a sound that meshes timeless songwriting and storytelling with a hard-hitting and decidedly modern musical attack. That signature style has been present through the decades, baked into the grooves of smash hits like 1996’s “Bringing Down the Horse” as well as more recent and exploratory fare like 2012’s “Glad All Over.” Even so, in recent years, Dylan – the Wallflowers’ founding singer, songwriter and guitarist – has repeatedly stepped outside of his band, first with a pair of more acoustic and rootsy records, 2008’s Seeing Things and 2010’s Women + Country, and then with the 2018 film Echo in the Canyon and the accompanying soundtrack, which saw him collaborate with a host of artists classic and contemporary, from Neil Young and Eric Clapton to Beck and Fiona Apple. But while it’s been nine long years since we’ve heard from the group with whom he first made his mark, the Wallflowers are silent no more. And Dylan always knew they’d return. “The Wallflowers is much of my life’s work,” he says simply. Good band name aside, that life’s work continues with Exit Wounds, the brand-new Wallflowers studio offering. The collection marks the first new Wallflowers material since Glad All Over. And while the wait has been long, the much-anticipated record finds the band’s signature sound – lean, potent and eminently entrancing – intact, even as Dylan surrounds himself with a fresh cast of musicians.

Don McLean was born in New Rochelle, New York, in 1945. By the age of five, he had developed an interest in all forms of music and would spend hours listening to the radio and records that were around the house. His love of music allowed him to flourish and he would often perform shows for family and friends. He rose to international stardom in 1971 with the release of “American Pie.” Thirty years later, “American Pie” was voted number 5 in a poll of the 365 “Songs of the Century” compiled by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts. In 2003, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Other hits include “Crying,” “And I Love You So,” “Vincent (Starry, Starry Night),” and “Castles in the Air.” In 2004, he was inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame.

The Francis Marion University Concert Band is composed of FMU students as well as community members from the Pee Dee region. Community members include professional area music educators, band directors, choir directors, ministers of music, and FMU music faculty members. Membership is open to all FMU students and area residents who are experienced concert band instrumentalists. Performances include traditional concert band music as well as popular and show music. The program began as a way to give students of FMU a chance to perform music, earn academic credit for performance in the ensemble, and to become involved with other students in campus life. We model our performance methodology and musical ideology on the performance practice of drummer/composer Max Roach’s percussion ensemble M’Boom, especially in their focus on jazz and non-Western musical cultures as a touchstone for aesthetic inspiration. We employ improvisation as a key mode of praxis—both in terms of theory and practice—and special focus is given to compositions invented during collective improvisation exercises. Additionally, we explore “minimalism,” “game,” and “open score” notation/compositional systems, while also examining the ways in which poetry and literature can be interpreted in a musical setting. This group has sung in numerous area churches and has also performed with the Florence Symphony Orchestra. One of these was the favorite fairy tale of the Brothers Grimm, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” This time, the fairy tale comes to life in dance and staging by the State Ballet Theater of Ukraine. Our ballet is a story about love, friendship, witchcraft, and the eternal struggle between good and evil. Snow White is an excellent opportunity to spend time with the whole family and to introduce children to the art of classical ballet. A unique production, an excellent plot (bright acting images, virtuoso solo parts, comical dwarfs, funny little animals), famous characters, and dynamic music will give both adults and children a festive mood.

Direct from New York, the original Cast of “Forever Motown” delights with nine all-star performers, including former members of The Four Tops, The Temptations, and the Marvelettes. Forever Motown features Theo Peoples, Glenn Carl Leonard, and Traci Robinson-Greene. If you’ve ever heard Theo Peoples’ voice, it’s no secret why many regard him as one of the most ‘AUTHENTIC’ voices in the music industry and agree he has raised the bar high because of his soulful vocal style! For nearly two decades, Theo Peoples’ voice has been critical to the legacy of not just one but two of Motown’s iconic groups – the Temptations AND The Four Tops’! He has earned the singular honor of being the only man to be a member of both legendary groups, and his bona fide voice has been a ‘well received’ contribution in both cases! Glenn Carl Leonard started singing at the early age of 6 years old and by the time he reached 13 he began to earn a living performing. His first recording was with ‘The Chancellor’s On Cap City Records, a subsidiary of Scepter. He later recorded with True Reflection on Atlantic Records. In 1975, Glenn came to the attention of the world renowned and legendary the Temptations’. He had a long and illustrious career as the first tenor and lead singer of The Temptations from 1975 to 1983. He performed on 10 albums with The Temptations, singing lead on many songs including“I’m on Fire,” “Go For It,” “The Best of Both Worlds,” “Open Their Eyes,” “Ever Ready Love,” and the classic Christmas song“Silent Night” from TheTemptations’ Give Love At Christmas LP. One of the highlights of Glenn’s career was being a part of “The Temptations Reunion Tour” in 1982. After leaving The Temptations in 1983, Glenn entered into full time ministry. He founded and pastors a church in Houston, TX and is now doing concerts again with his new group, giving audiences all over the country a genuine Temptations experience. Traci-Robinson Greene is a New York born and educated artist who received dance training at Alvin Ailey Dance Center and Dance Theatre of Harlem. A triple threat, she has appeared in theatre, film and television including“School Daze,” “Malcolm X,” “The Cosby Show,” “David Letterman Show,”the Time WarnerSingers and the 8-time Tony-nominated Broadway hit, Sophisticated Ladies. Fulfilling a lifelong dream, Traci became the lead singer of the Marvelletes in 1991, performing all over the world and many years of the run in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Since then Traci has been a featured voice in Forever Motown.

Sean Kennard has won top prizes in the Queen Elisabeth Competition (Belgium), the International Music Competition of Viña del Mar (Chile), the Vendome International Piano Competition (Portugal), the Sendai International Music Competition (Japan), the Hilton Head International Piano Competition (USA), the National Chopin Competition, the Iowa Piano Competition, the American Pianists Association, and the International Chopin Competition of the Pacific. This group has sung in numerous area churches and has also performed with the Florence Symphony Orchestra. They have performed such major choral works as the “Polovetzian Dance and Chorus” of Alexander Borodin, the “Schicksalslied” of Johannes Brahms, and the Ninth Symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven. Recently their concerts have included selections accompanied by the newly formed Francis Marion string ensemble. Francis Marion’s Voice Collective is a small, audition-only vocal group. This group performs throughout the region for schools and service organizations. They have also performed in Orlando, Florida, in Baltimore, Maryland, in Washington, D.C., in Vienna, Austria, and on a performance cruise to the Bahamas. Tickets are available to FMU students, faculty, and staff at no charge upon showing an FMU ID. Tickets to the general public are $10, as space allows. As the leader of the influential 60s group, The Byrds, he was on the leading edge, combining the rock beat of the Beatles with the folk sensibilities of Bob Dylan, to create the genre known as “folk-rock” His groundbreaking work on The Byrds “Sweetheart Of The Rodeo” album, is widely credited with ushering in the genre of country rock. Roger’s solo career began in 1973 and has yielded 13 albums, a Grammy nomination, and extensive touring and performing for enthralled audiences ever since.
